Description

This comprehensive course was written to meet Arizona’s state requirements.  This course covers 4 hours of learning in each of the following areas:  Professional Standards, Chiropractic Principles, Management of Common Diseases, History Taking and Record Keeping.  To register with the AZBCE as a C.A. students will also need to complete 4 hours in CPR from any nationally recognized CPR training company. 

Professional Standards-In this course students will develop front desk skills including listening and communication phone skills and new patient scripting.  Students will identify and learn procedures for scheduling patient visits, managing patient flow and color coding of appointments.  They will learn the benefits of cluster and multiple appointment booking. Students will learn recall procedures and scripting.   Students will develop an understanding of front desk procedures for a patient’s first day of treatment.  This will include new patient check lists, a second day or report of finding procedures and asking for referrals. Students will be able to clarify the differences between the law and ethics.  Students will review the state law applicable to chiropractic assistants, doctor conduct, C.A. conduct, patient conduct and unprofessional conduct.  

Chiropractic Principles- In this course students will learn about the history of chiropractic and a D.C.’s education.  They will learn common chiropractic terminology.  They will investigate the components of the vertebral subluxation complex and develop the skills necessary to explain what subluxation is to a patient.  They will learn spinal anatomy and be able to identify common anterior and posterior muscles.  They will learn how to palpate the vertebrae.  This course includes a discussion on spinal pain syndromes, myotomes, dermatomes, and psychosomatic disorders.  

Management of Common Diseases- In this course students will learn about common diseases and conditions that present to a chiropractic office.  Conditions that will be explored are rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, 5 types of headaches fibromyalgia, torticollis and whiplash, inflammatory conditions, postural abnormalities, and carpal tunnel syndrome treated by a chiropractor.  Students will review conditions that require precautions to treat and conditions that are contraindicated for chiropractic manipulation.   In this course students will also learn how to perform vital signs.

History Taking- In this course students will develop communication skills, including personal boundary issues, active listening, body language and matching and mirroring techniques. Students will learn the various interview stages and assist the C.A. in understanding informed consent as well as learn the key components of a patient history. Each student will broaden their understanding of special circumstances that require additional history taking skills such as a motor vehicle accident or work injury.  Students will also be able to identify and discuss the various radiographic studies or diagnostic tools.

Record Keeping- This course starts with a discussion on the purpose of notes.  Students will learn how to write a note using the acronym (S.O.A.P.) for charting.  They will learn techniques for medical documentation and understand why certain information is necessary to acquire from the patient.  Students will learn how to set up a medical file and develop skills for performing and insurance verification.   They will learn the basics of insurance billing terminology and broaden the C.A.’s understanding of electronic billing. Students will be able to identify the components of a medical necessity / appeal letter.

This 4-hour course is broken into 1-hour sections.  All lesson quizzes are multiple choice.  There are 80 possible points for this course.  Each quiz consists of 4 questions designed to test knowledge of the lesson, objectives, and section goals.  Students must successfully answer 3 of the 4 questions correctly to receive a completion for that individual section.  Students must attain an overall score of 60 out of 80, which is equivalent to 75% or better to pass the course.  Students will be allowed to retake each section quiz after re-studying the course material for a minimum of 5 minutes.  Each section has a multiple-choice test, there are 80 possible points for this course.
